Mayor Asks For Tax Rise; Some Ask Why?

Reference Arkansas Democrat Gazette Saturday April 19 Front Page Article by Jake Sandlin.

Reading this article covering Mayor Hays' purposed one cent additional sales tax provides additional information we can use to help us become better informed on this hot topic. We can now develop our qualified questions to Mayor Hays at our May 5th NLAN Meeting. We are hoping Mayor Hays says "YES" to our invitation. Alderman Hight responded that he plans to be with usNo word from Alderman Witcher as yet.

Please remember that Mayor Hays, along with Aldermen Hight & Witcher, need to hear your thoughts, questions and comments today, now! Your direct input will be recognized and considered prior to the public hearing scheduled for the April 28th City Council Meeting. Your communications now may help the Council to decide whether to continue with the sales tax resolution or at a minimum to modify it's content for a revised tax package to be considered by the voters. Speak up now, and let's see what happens on April 28th at the City Council Meeting, and thereafter what tax package if any may be brought to the May 5th meeting for our consideration. Hope to see you there!

Early this Monday morning I received via e-mail confirmation of Alderman Witcher's attendance for our May 5th NLAN Meeting! Along with Alderman Hight's attendance we now have the initial basis for a productive dialogue taking place at our meeting regarding the proposed additional sales tax. We are awaitng Mayor Hays' response to our invitation to attend - we hope he can do so!

I, for one, hope that the city council will defeat this tax completely before it even comes to a vote.

Amen, but I don't think they will do it! Too many financial commitments have been made to others (developers) to simply drop the whole tax proposal from sight. Besides, if the tax is passed to provide raises for our police and firemen then it opens the money drawer for all City Council members to get a raise, along with the Mayor. And word on the street is that Mayor Hays is seeking a very large increase in his pay, reaching from his current $94,000+ towards the same level as the Little Rock Mayor's compensation of approx. $160,000+. Does Hays need the additional sales tax to have the monies available to fund such an increase in his pay after all the other city employees get their cost of living 3 or 4% pay increases?
